Dugi Otok stretches forty-five kilometres along the outer edge of the Zadar archipelago, its western flank a fortress of vertical dolomite dropping ninety metres into the Adriatic, its eastern shore a sequence of shallow bays and white-pebble coves that remain inaccessible by road.
The island's name—"Long Island" in Croatian—is descriptive rather than poetic, yet it conceals one of the most biodiverse marine corridors in the Mediterranean, a fact that earned Telašćica Bay protected status in 1988 and later inclusion in Natura 2000. Sakarun Beach, a crescent of fine quartz sand at the island's northern tip, draws its pale colour from ground limestone carried by Adriatic currents, a geological accident that produces water clarity exceeding thirty metres in summer months.

Snorkelling conditions peak between June and early October, when thermoclines keep surface temperatures near twenty-four degrees Celsius and visibility remains high. The island's interior, by contrast, is sparsely inhabited—fewer than three hundred permanent residents across a dozen villages—and retains terraced olive groves and dry-stone walls that date to Illyrian settlement periods, a landscape shaped by millennia of subsistence agriculture rather than modern tourism.
